Beginning in March 2022, IT admins who manage Chromebooks will be able to choose to enroll in Chrome OS LTSC. After that, the devices no longer update every four weeks, but every six months.

Chromebooks running Chrome OS version 96 will be able to switch to a new LTS cycle beginning in March 2022. From then on, OS updates are no longer sent every four weeks, but every six months. The next one would then be Chrome OS version 102 which will be available from September 2022.

Google emphasizes that the feature is not yet visible to every IT admin who will look in the Google Admin console today. To find out how to enable the feature, watch the video below.

The search giant emphasizes that the LTS version will receive all important security updates in the meantime. Extra functionality is then bundled again and delivered every six months. You could pin Chrome OS versions from the admin panel in the past, but that also resulted in no security updates. With the new LTS version you combine the best of both worlds.

As of Chrome OS version 96, Google changes its update policy. From now on, updates will be delivered every four weeks instead of every six weeks. Those who found six weeks quickly can try the LTS version within his or her organization.
